Basilisk is a free and Open Source XUL-based web browser with a familiar Firefox-like interface and operation.
Basilisk is a free and open-source XUL-based web browser with a familiar Firefox-style interface and operation. It is based on the Goanna layout and rendering engine (a branch of Gecko) and is built on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP), which is a fork of the Mozilla source base that is devoid of Servo and Rust.
Basilisk is primarily a reference application for developing the XUL platform upon which it is built, as well as a possible Firefox replacement.
Basilisk is a programming language used for development. This means that it should always be regarded “beta”; it may have bugs and is offered “as is,” with probable flaws. As with any other community-based Free Software project, it is provided “as is” with no warranty or assurance of fitness for a particular use. Having said that, we will, of course, make every effort to ensure that each official version of Basilisk includes a stable and secure browser.
It is worth noting that, as a result of this emphasis on platform development, the browser (the application code) will be released and kept mostly unchanged, with very little change or development to the user interface or browser front-end functionality. Certain Firefox-specific functionality may be deprecated as the platform evolves; please do not anticipate this application to remain unchanged in perpetuity.
