Overview
Description

Cakewalk Sonar is a digital audio workstation for Windows offering multitrack recording, MIDI editing, and mixing, built as the direct successor to the now-retired Cakewalk by BandLab (which stopped allowing activations at the end of 2025). It ships with a fully functional free tier alongside a paid BandLab membership that unlocks advanced mixing and sound-library features.

Spotify is a music and podcast streaming service offering on-demand access to a catalog of over 100 million tracks alongside a large library of podcasts and audiobooks. Its recommendation algorithms power personalized playlists like Discover Weekly and Release Radar that have become central to how many listeners find new music. Spotify Wrapped, the platform's annual personalized listening recap, has become a cultural moment shared widely on social media each December, reinforcing Spotify's brand well beyond its core streaming functionality. Spotify for Artists gives musicians direct access to streaming analytics and playlist pitching tools, while Spotify Connect lets users seamlessly move playback between phones, speakers, and other connected devices.

Pros

  • Direct, actively maintained successor to the well-known Cakewalk by BandLab
  • Deep MIDI editing tools rival paid competitors
  • Large built-in sample and loop library through BandLab Sounds
  • Excellent music discovery algorithms
  • Huge catalog of tracks and podcasts
  • Cross-device playback with Spotify Connect
  • Generous free tier with ads
Cons

Great tool for music

Been a daily user of Spotify for a while now. Cross-device playback with Spotify Connect. One minor gripe: audio quality capped below some competitors even on premium, but it hasn't been a dealbreaker. Would recommend to anyone considering it.
