Drybar Buttercup Blow-Dryer vs Oral-B iO Series 9
Side-by-side comparison of features, pricing, ratings, and alternatives.

The Buttercup is Drybar's flagship blow-dryer, developed out of a chain of blowout salons rather than a general appliance brand, and it is designed around the workflow those salons use: high airflow to move water out of the hair fast, ionic conditioning to reduce frizz and static, and a narrow concentrator nozzle to direct air precisely while working section by section with a round brush. It offers multiple heat and speed settings plus a cool shot for setting a style once it is dry, and a removable rear filter that can be cleaned rather than clogging permanently with lint. The body is designed for the ergonomics of extended salon use, which translates into balance in the hand for home users doing long styling sessions on thick or long hair rather than a quick rough dry.
The Oral-B iO Series 9 pairs a magnetic, micro-vibrating brush head with linear magnetic drive technology for a smoother, gentler brushing motion compared to traditional oscillating-rotating brushes, while still delivering thorough plaque removal. A color-coded smart pressure sensor lights up green, yellow, or red on the handle to indicate ideal, acceptable, or excessive brushing pressure, helping prevent gum damage from brushing too hard. The companion app uses the phone camera during brushing to provide an AI-powered 3D mouth map showing which areas were missed or need more attention, turning brushing into a more guided, data-driven routine.

Decent but has rough edges
Oral-B iO Series 9 is solid overall, though it's not perfect. On the plus side, genuinely useful real-time pressure feedback. That said, app features require a smartphone, which held us back from rating it higher.
