Overview
Description

Fan Control is a Windows utility by developer Remi Mercier (Rem0o) that gives PC builders granular control over CPU, GPU, case, and AIO pump fans. Instead of relying on motherboard BIOS curves, it reads temperatures from multiple hardware sources at once and lets you graph custom fan-speed responses per component. It uses the open-source LibreHardwareMonitor library for sensor data and supports a plugin system for extra hardware support (including some Dell laptops and HWiNFO integration). The app itself is closed-source but completely free, distributed via GitHub releases and package managers like Winget, Scoop, and Chocolatey.

Rescuezilla is a free, open-source disk imaging application that provides a friendly graphical front end for Clonezilla, letting users back up, restore, and recover a full system even when it cannot boot into its regular OS. It boots from a USB drive or CD/DVD independent of the installed operating system, so it works across Windows, macOS, and Linux machines alike. It supports device-to-device cloning without a third drive, reads and writes formats compatible with VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V, and QEMU, and can mount disk images to browse and extract individual files without doing a full restore.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Completely free with no ads, license keys, or nag screens
  • Very low resource footprint compared to full vendor RGB/control suites
  • Extremely granular curve and multi-sensor mixing control
  • Active development with a real plugin ecosystem
  • Free and open source under GPL-3.0
  • Much friendlier GUI than raw Clonezilla while staying compatible with it
  • Works on any OS since it boots independently from a USB drive
  • Supports multiple industry-standard disk image formats
Cons
  • Windows only, no macOS or Linux build
  • UI and curve editor have a learning curve for first-time users
  • Relies on motherboard fan headers being software-controllable, which varies by hardware
  • Requires creating and booting from external media, less convenient than an installed app
  • Development is community/volunteer-driven, so releases can be infrequent
  • Advanced partition operations still require some familiarity with disk imaging concepts
