How to Decide
Briar is a free, open‑source peer‑to‑peer encrypted messenger used by activists, journalists and privacy‑focused users who need communication that works offline via Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi or Tor. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Session leans on a decentralized onion‑routed network and eliminates phone‑number or email sign‑up; Jami emphasizes true peer‑to‑peer operation that can run over a local network with no internet at all; Tox (qTox) is chosen for its unlimited file‑transfer size and an ad‑free, completely free protocol; SimpleX Chat stands out with self‑hostable relay and file‑transfer servers and a design that removes all persistent user IDs.
When weighing replacements for Briar, focus on (1) offline connectivity – whether the app can function purely over Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi, a local LAN, or requires internet routing; (2) identity model – the presence or absence of phone numbers, email accounts, or persistent user IDs that affect anonymity and recovery; (3) data‑transfer limits – whether file sharing is unrestricted or capped; (4) infrastructure control – the ability to self‑host servers or rely on fully decentralized nodes; and (5) network latency and reliability – how onion routing or pure peer‑to‑peer connections impact speed and message delivery in constrained environments.
