Tales of the Unknown: Volume I - The Bard's Tale

How to Decide

Tales of the Unknown: Volume I – The Bard's Tale is celebrated for its groundbreaking 3D graphics and deep party‑and‑equipment customization, and it’s a staple for fans of classic RPGs. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Yendorian Tales leans into a branching narrative with multiple endings; Telengard stands out with both real‑time and turn‑based combat options; The Bard's Tale II is chosen for its massive wilderness map and the new Archmage class; The Bard's Tale III differentiates itself with auto‑mapping and time‑warped realms rendered in a first‑person pseudo‑3D view; Wizardry: Knight of Diamonds offers save‑anywhere flexibility and randomly generated dungeon levels.

When weighing replacements for Tales of the Unknown, focus on (1) how the save system handles long sessions – the original’s limited saves versus Wizardry’s save‑anywhere or auto‑mapping in Bard’s Tale III; (2) combat mode variety – turn‑based only in the target versus Telengard’s hybrid real‑time/turn‑based; (3) world scope and exploration style – a confined dungeon crawl versus Bard’s Tale II’s expansive wilderness or Yendorian’s hidden lore‑rich areas; (4) narrative depth – linear storyline versus Yendorian’s branching endings or Wizardry’s lore‑heavy sequel plot; and (5) class and spell diversity – the target’s four classes versus the Archmage in Bard’s Tale II, the Geomancer/Chronomancer in Bard’s Tale III, or the multiple classes in Wizardry.
