How to Decide

Chromatic is a visual regression and UI review platform built by the Storybook maintainers and is used by frontend engineering teams that rely on Storybook or component‑driven UI development. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Applitools leans on AI‑powered visual testing that plugs into existing Selenium, Cypress, Playwright and other test frameworks while offering a custom‑quoted, test‑unit pricing model; Percy emphasizes AI‑assisted visual regression with a freemium tier, a broad integration list including Storybook and a real‑device cloud for iOS and Android testing.

When weighing Chromatic against its peers, focus on (1) pricing structure – Chromatic’s freemium model charges per snapshot while Applitools requires a custom quote based on test units and Percy offers a free tier with paid upgrades; (2) integration depth – Chromatic shines with native Storybook support, Applitools integrates broadly with Selenium‑style frameworks, and Percy adds Storybook plus a real‑device cloud; (3) AI‑driven diff capabilities – Chromatic provides built‑in visual and accessibility diff, Applitools uses Visual AI to ignore dynamic content, and Percy adds an AI review agent that prioritizes changes; (4) device and browser coverage – Chromatic runs tests in real Chrome and Safari, Applitools offers cross‑browser/device testing without hardware maintenance, and Percy includes a cloud of real iOS/Android devices.

Percy

AI-suggested

Percy is a visual testing platform, now part of BrowserStack, that captures screenshots of a web application across browsers and screen sizes on every commit, then compares them against an approved baseline to flag unintended visual changes.

✦ Best for teams that want automated visual regression testing layered onto an existing ci pipeline.

“Percy provides cloud visual regression testing with cross‑browser snapshots, directly competing with Chromatic's core purpose.”

Cypress

AI-suggested

Cypress is an open-source test automation framework for web applications, built specifically for JavaScript and running tests directly inside the browser alongside the application under test.

✦ Best for javascript/typescript teams wanting fast, in-browser end-to-end test debugging.

“BrowserStack lets teams run visual checks on real browsers and devices, overlapping Chromatic's cross‑browser UI testing.”

Applitools

AI-suggested

Applitools is a visual AI testing platform built around Applitools Eyes, which compares baseline screenshots against new builds to automatically catch visual and functional regressions across browsers and devices.

✦ Best for teams with existing selenium/cypress suites that want ai-powered visual and accessibility regression detection.
