How to Decide
Mailfence is known for its Belgium‑based, end‑to‑end encrypted email suite that bundles calendar, documents and contacts for privacy‑conscious individuals, families and SMBs. The alternatives split into a few clear camps: Posteo leans on fully green‑energy hosting and anonymous sign‑up; Tuta Mail is distinguished by its fully open‑source client stack and quantum‑resistant encryption; StartMail is chosen for its unlimited disposable email aliases and built‑in PGP fallback for non‑encrypted recipients.
When comparing Mailfence to these options, focus on (1) pricing model – Mailfence offers a freemium tier while Posteo and StartMail require paid subscriptions and Tuta Mail provides a permanent free tier; (2) storage capacity – Mailfence’s free plan is limited to 1 GB, Posteo starts at 4 GB with upgrades, Tuta Mail caps at 1 GB on the free tier, and StartMail offers 20‑30 GB depending on plan; (3) openness of the code – Tuta Mail’s clients are open‑source and auditable, whereas Mailfence, Posteo and StartMail are closed source; and (4) specialized feature sets – green‑energy hosting (Posteo), unlimited disposable aliases (StartMail), and quantum‑safe cryptography (Tuta Mail) each address distinct privacy or sustainability priorities.
